THE HUNT FOR NEW CHALLENGES DRIVING JOBSEEKERS IN JAPAN MORE THAN SALARY

77% Japanese workers said they are actively on the hunt for a new job or are open to new opportunities, finds the 2022 Hays Asia Salary Guide survey.

Now in its 15th edition, the Guide compiles and presents salary and sector overviews based on real data and a survey of skilled professionals across China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Over 9,500 responses were collected between October to November 2021.

The primary driver for Japanese jobseekers was ‘seeking new challenges’, with 56% of respondents saying it was their main reason for a job switch. Nearly as important was ‘better salary package’ at 53%. ‘Lack of career progression’ was the third biggest driver at 29%.
“While important, Japan is the only market surveyed where the salary did not take precedence over other motivating factors when it came to job hunting. Comparatively, ‘Better salary package’ was overwhelmingly the top reason cited for changing jobs in China, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, and Singapore,” says Grant Torrens, Managing Director of Hays Japan.

Employers seem to understand the important of compensation to talent. After a challenging 2021, more employers have plans to increase salaries in the next 12 months compared to this time last year, with 47% planning on increasing salaries by up to 3%, while 25% anticipate increments between 3-6%. This is critical for staff retention, says Torrens.

“Employees who are satisfied with their pay are more likely to remain at their jobs. 48% of employees picked ‘salary package’ as the top factor keeping them in their current role. Thus, employers who are prepared to meet the salary expectations of employees will see greater success in retaining top staff.”

Other key employee retention factors uncovered by the survey were alignment of company values and culture, and work-life balance.

“If there are challenges in meeting expectations for salaries, consider more creative ways to compensate talent, such as increased work flexibility, better work-life balance, or clear promotional pathways.”
