EMPLOYERS IN JAPAN LEAST CONFIDENT ABOUT HIRING SKILLED TALENT COMPARED TO REST OF ASIA
Discover recruitment and salary trends, sector insights and more in our 2022 Hays Asia Salary Guide Launch Webinar

Over half of employers in Japan are not confident about hiring the skilled talent their organisations need in 2022, finds the 2022 Hays Asia Salary Guide.

Now in its 15th edition, the Guide compiles and presents salary and sector overviews based on real data and a survey of skilled professionals across China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Over 9,500 responses were collected between October to November 2021.

48% of employers said they were not very confident about hiring skilled talent while 7% said they were not at all confident. This was the weakest show of confidence compared to the rest of Asia.

Grant Torrens, Managing Director of Hays Japan points out, “Given that Japanese employers demonstrated the strongest hiring appetites in the region, with 59% of employers saying they planned to increase permanent staff levels in 2022, this might make filling key roles more challenging in the coming months.”

Asked why they thought there were skill shortages in their organisations, most employers cited the lack of learning and development opportunities to upskill current employees as the top reason. Following closely behind were ‘higher compensation offered elsewhere’ and ‘brand identity, culture, or employer value proposition needs to be improved’.

On the other hand, when it came to what was done to improve job prospects, Japan registered the least professionals who said they spent time developing their skills. 44% of professionals in Japan said they worked on their soft skills, while 23% said they spent time developing their hard skills.

Given the shifting role requirements which are increasingly calling for new skill sets, Torrens emphasises the importance of upskilling.

“Developing skill sets is paramount to success in our new world of work and it is the joint responsibility of employers and employees. Employers should offer more role-related training and development opportunities, and at the same time, employees should take the initiative to upskill themselves outside of work hours too.”
