CONTINGENT WORKERS KEY TO UNLOCKING THE BENEFITS OF A BOUNDARYLESS WORKFORCE

Hays, the world’s leading specialist in workforce solutions and recruitment, says global trends and technologies have led to a re-emergence of the boundaryless workforce concept first established 30 years ago.

A boundaryless workforce is without hierarchical, physical or geographical limitations and can provide organisations with several benefits including enhanced collaboration, increased flexibility, agile decision making, improved talent acquisition and greater global reach.
Several factors have prompted a renewed interest in the concept, such as a greater focus on collaboration driven by technology and acute skill shortages meaning organisations are willing to look further afield for professionals regardless of location.

Contingent workers - which include non-permanent workers, hired on a temporary or fixed-term contract to provide a specific service, for a defined time period – could be a key enabler in shaping a boundaryless workforce and are a vital asset for organisations looking to dismantle barriers and encourage greater innovation and collaboration across teams.

The benefits of contingent workers include:

  • Flexibility in scaling to meet demand. Contingent workers can help organisations to scale to meet capacity.
  • Access to niche skillsets. Specialist contractors operating across industries can make an instant impact and are often deployed to projects involving complex change.
  • Cost-effective labour. Talent platforms enable organisations to split a ‘job’ into a series of projects, offering a cost-effective means of getting work done, as organisations purchase only the specific expertise and amount of time required.
Alistair Cox, Hays CEO, commented, “The flexibility with which contingent workers engage with organisations is helping to ‘knock down the walls’ within businesses. They are increasingly utilised to add new perspectives and operate across hierarchies to implement change. And with specialist skills across most industries in high demand, the focus is less on where these workers are based and instead on how we can facilitate a seamless onboarding and engagement experience – remote or otherwise.

Alistair continued, “The physical, geographical, hierarchical and cultural limitations that have traditionally prevented organisations from edging closer to boundaryless are being challenged by the ever-growing extended workforce.”

There are potential disadvantages to boundaryless workforces, including workers feeling lost or unsupported by a lack of clear hierarchy or accountability. Leaders are also required to adjust their mindset from ‘directing’ to ‘coaching’, stripping away the rigid structures and trusting in their new teams to deliver.
