About the Role
A global leader in science-driven consumer innovation is seeking a Patent Agent to support IP protection and strategy for its Japan-based Research & Innovation laboratories. In this role, you will work closely with scientists and external patent firms to identify inventions, develop IP strategies, and manage patent prosecution activities. You will also collaborate with international IP teams on cross-regional innovation projects.

Key Responsibilities

Partner with R&D teams to identify inventions and guide them through the evaluation and protection process.
Lead the development and implementation of IP strategies for inventions generated by Japan-based innovation teams, primarily in haircare and skincare.
Coordinate with external patent firms to prepare high-quality patent applications.
Independently respond to patent office actions or review external counsel’s responses to ensure thorough and effective prosecution.
Manage the IP portfolio for Japan-originated inventions.
Conduct and deliver patentability assessments and Right-to-Market analyses.
Provide training to raise IP awareness among innovation teams.
Collaborate with IP colleagues in other regions on global or transversal projects.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
3–5 years of experience in patent counseling, including drafting and prosecution.
Experience providing patentability, validity, and freedom‑to‑operate (Right-to-Market) opinions.
Strong ability to work independently and make informed legal decisions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong English language skills.
Experience in multinational/multicultural environments; adaptable and collaborative.
(Preferred) Advanced degrees.
(Preferred) Registered Patent Attorney.

Work Environment

This role requires extended computer-based work.
Reports to the IP & Legal R&I Manager for North Asia.
